Healthy Aging Month: Are We Paying Attention to Our Veterans?

ree

September is Healthy Aging Month and it has me thinking about the men and women who wore the uniform, especially our older Veterans.

Back when I was part of our VFW Veteran Service Organization team, I had the privilege of meeting Veterans from every era. But my heart has always leaned toward our Vietnam Veterans. Too many of them came home to a country that didn’t meet their needs, especially when it came to mental health and healthcare. Decades later, those gaps are still showing.

I’ll never forget one coffee chat where an older Veteran spoke. He wasn’t asking for recognition or benefits. He was worried about losing his home. After more than 20 years in the same apartment, the rising rent was pushing him out. He felt overlooked and unheard and sadly, his story isn’t unique.

That’s why Healthy Aging Month matters. It’s a reminder that getting older shouldn’t feel like another battle. Healthy aging isn't just about eating right and staying active but it's also affordable healthcare, safe housing, mental wellness, knowing and understanding your Veterans benefits and strong community support. Our Veterans deserve all of that and more.

So, here’s the real question: Are we paying attention?

Shero Coffee Club wants to honor those who paved the way before us. This month, let’s do something simple but powerful:

  • Check in on an older Veteran you know.

  • Help an older Veteran seek their benefits.

  • Share a cup of Shero coffee and listen to their story.

  • Support organizations like the VFW, American Legion and those fighting for Veteran housing and healthcare.

  • Remind them they’re seen, valued, and not forgotten.

Healthy Aging Month is a call to action. Let’s make sure our Veterans age with the dignity and respect they’ve earned.
